Dr. Andrey Zayakin has a PhD in Physics, currently works as a Data Journalism Department Editor at Novaya Gazeta, Russia. Has previously worked at University of Santiago de Compostela, Spain, Universita degli Studi di Perugia, Italy, and Ludwigs-Maximillians-Universitaet, Munich, Germany.
Dr. Andrey Zayakin reviews the findings of Dissernet – a project by Russian academics and journalists that aims at disclosing plagiarism in dissertations and scholarly papers. He also reviews the system of “PhD Mills” that has emerged during the last two decades, the efforts by activists and scientists to shut it down and the counter efforts of this system to survive. “PhD Mills” – an institution or organization that grants large numbers of educational degrees based on inadequate or inferior education and assessment of the recipients. Dr. Andrey Zayakin also discusses the correlation between plagiarized texts, bad science and pseudoscience.
During the lecture Dr. Andrey Zayakin will present his findings about plagiarism and pseudoscience.
