Lecture “Women, Inequality and Media Work” by dr. Anne O’ Brien

We are inviting you to the lecture “Women, Inequality and Media Work” by dr. Anne O’Brien, an Associate Professor in the Department of Media Studies at Maynooth University which will take place on January 18, 5 pm.

The lecture will be streamed online – over the Facebook page of the Institute of International Relations and Political Science of Vilnius University.

The event will be moderated by dr. Jelena Šalaj, the post-doctoral fellow at the Institute of International Relations and Political Science.

The lecture investigates how women experience gender inequality in film and television production industries, and explores how women experience the structures and culture of media work. Examining women’s place in the production of media is vital to understanding the broader and related question of how women are (mis)represented in media content. This talk looks behind the camera to explore the world of women working in media industries and unpacks the systemic gender inequality that they experience at work.

Dr. Anne O’Brien has published a number of articles on the representation of women in radio and television, on women workers in creative industries and examined why women leave careers in screen production. She has written about how media produce content on mental ill health, suicide, intimate partner homicide and domestic violence. Her 2019 book explores ‘Women, Inequality and Media Work’ (Routledge) and her most recent co-edited collection explores ‘Media Work, Mothers and Motherhood’ (Routledge, 2021). She is currently researching the experiences of mothers who are workers in creative industries.

Seminar series are organized by Feminist politic and critical theory research group at the Institute of International Relations and Political Science and Thinking Motherhood research group at the Faculty of Philology.
