On the 11th of October, the institute will host a special guest – Prof. Dr. Jae-Seung Lee. He will give the lecture “New Geopolitics and Security Cooperation between Europe and South Korea.”
Following the Russo-Ukrainian conflict, NATO has actively sought collaborations with strategic partners in the Indo-Pacific. Confronted by immediate threats from North Korea and the potential geopolitical influences from China and Russia, South Korea necessitates a renewed security framework to address escalating geopolitical challenges.
The global security landscape is interconnecting with an expanded agenda that now encompasses pressing concerns such as cybersecurity, climate change, and supply chains. The recent inception of the US-Korea-Japan trilateral partnership signifies a pivotal progression towards a more comprehensive security framework.
This presentation will explore the emerging opportunities and challenges within South Korea’s evolving security strategy, emphasizing the potential of the “Pan Alliance” to foster collaboration between South Korea, the US, Indo-Pacific allies, and European counterparts.
Prof. Dr. Jae-Seung Lee holds the Jean Monnet Chair at Korea University’s College & Graduate School of International Studies and directs the Ilmin International Research Institute (IIRI). In 2023, he served as President of the Korean Society of Contemporary European Studies. A renowned foreign policy and regional cooperation expert, Prof. Lee advises the presidential office, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Ministry of Unification.
The lecture takes place on the 11th of October, at 3 PM in room 303.
The lecture is part of the IIRPS VU course “International Relations Theories” (lecturer Dr. Valentinas Beržiūnas).
