Description:
The process of the expansion of the European Union (EU) and NATO in the Baltic Sea region and their geographical approach to the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) has been examined in depth. Usually, such works either raise specific issues pertaining to the consequences of expansion of these organizations to neighboring states, or analyze global problems – possible scenarios of further cooperation of Euro-Atlantic institutions and the impact of implementing one or another scenario on the security of the Baltic Sea region and Europe. Nonetheless, there has been no conceptual study that would comprehensively assess the prospects of foreign policy of Lithuania as a member of the EU and NATO towards East. The book deals with this problem and searches for ways to use the foreign policy experience of Lithuania in the shaping of the future relationships with the Eastern neighbors in consideration of the changing international environment and identifying the position and role of Lithuania within NATO and the EU. The book examines this problem providing answers to several questions. How does the process of Lithuania’s integration to the EU and NATO affect the policy of Russia towards Kaliningrad area? How does the internal situation in Belarus affects the declared idea of the allied state of Russia and Belarus and what is its relationship with the membership of Lithuania in Euro-Atlantic institutions? How is the geopolitical identity of the Ukraine influenced by its internal political processes and what are the specific measures to be taken by Lithuania as a member of the EU and NATO to contribute to the geopolitical resolve by the Ukraine?
