How come a passive and conformist society managed to create a well-organized and effective movement Sąjūdis? The book discusses small groups of people which existed before Sajūdis was established – ethnographic movements, underground catholic resistance, spaces of rock culture, bohemian movements, circles of scientists, etc – and argues that these groups were the main source of the movement Sąjūdis – the civic movement that helped to dismantle the Soviet Union itself.
