Description:

The book takes a new approach to the history of the birth of the Sąjūdis movement and seeks to solve the dilemma how a well-organised and effective social movement comprising several hundreds of thousands of members could be formed in a seemingly passive and conformist Soviet society. The book discusses the centres of society disobedient to the Soviet system, which functioned before the Sąjūdis movement, i.e. ethnocultural movement and church underground, rock cultural spaces, artists’ and scholars’ groups, discussion clubs, green and monument protection movements. Based on abundant empirical material, the book employs historical and sociological methods and analyses in what social medium the idea of Sąjūdis was born and how it was realised, who the pioneers of Sąjūdis were in Vilnius, Kaunas, Klaipėda and other places of Lithuania. Why was ethnocultural movement dangerous to the Soviet regime? How did subcultures survive in the Soviet system? What possibilities to develop alternative discourses did scholars and artists have? How was “green awareness” born? Was Sąjūdis born inside or outside the system? These are the main questions that prominent historians, sociologists and political scientists are trying to answer.
