Project idea
Since Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014, much attention in academic studies has been given to social media and the proliferation of Russian disinformation. However, despite greater awareness of this threat, the spread of disinformation about the war in Ukraine continues to undermine Western democratic institutions and NATO’s support for Ukraine. In response to the risks associated with the spread of disinformation, European Union lawmakers have restricted the public’s access to Russian state-controlled news outlets. This research will examine the legal basis for such restrictions, thus raising awareness of the issue and the need for such restrictions.
