Ilona Jurkonytė yra kino ir medijų tyrėja, kino kuratorė, Vilniaus universiteto fondo stipendininkė. 2015-2019 m. Ilona buvo Vanier stipendininkė Concordia universitete, Monrealyje, Kanadoje, kur įgijo kinotyros daktarės laipsnį. Prieš pradėdama akademinį darbą, Ilona buvo aktyvi kino kultūros veikėja, kino kuratorė. Šiuo metu, daktarės disertacijos pagrindu, Ilona rengia monografiją spaudai.
Ilonos specializacija: transnacionalinės kinotyros prieigos, meninis tyrimas, išplėsto lauko kinas, aplinkotyra ir medijos, medijos ir kritiniai infrastruktūros tyrimai.
Ilona iniciavo ir įsteigė Tarptautinį Kauno kino festivalį (2007), buvo jo vadovė (2007-2012) ir meno vadovė (2007-2020). 2012-2014 dirbo kino programos kuratore Šiuolaikinio meno centre, Vilniuje.

- 2012/08 Keynote speaker – “Geopolitics of Film Distribution in the Baltic countries” Step-in Locarno, organized by Locarno International Film Festival. This was an important event that marked a beginning of crucial changes in art house film distribution in the Baltic countries.
- 2007-2012 together with Dainius Genys and team of Kaunas International Film Festival, Ilona initiated and organized Romuva Cinema rescue, in Kaunas.
2007-2012 metais Ilona inicijavo ir kartu su Dainiumi Geniu bei Tarptautinio Kauno kino festivalio komanda sėkmingai organizavo „Romuvos“ kino teatro išsaugojimą Lietuvos kino kultūros ir Kauno miesto reikmėms.
